Fabulous lighting is an absolute must-have when it comes to styling bathrooms and bedrooms, so don’t risk leaving your lighting decisions to the very last minute.

It’s possible to both build a relaxing ambience and make a statement if you choose the right pendant lights and begin planning early.

Here, we’ll show you how to choose and position lights to create the perfect lighting look for your bathroom or bedroom.

Light it up: pendant lighting in your bathroom

A stunning pendant light can transform any bathroom into a stylish oasis – but when it comes to bathroom lighting, you’ll want to brush up on your IP rating know-how.

Any lights positioned close to a water source – think the shower, bath or sink – needs to use ‘ingress protection’ or IP rated fittings. You can check out our blog on IP rating and bathrooms for a full rundown of the regulations, but it’s worth keeping this in mind when looking for lights.

Using pendant lights specially made for bathrooms makes it easy to inject style and sophistication, while draw attention to the parts of the room you want to highlight.

A pair or a small cluster of pendants creates an easy focal point leading the eye from the bath to the ceiling. But you don’t have to go big to be bold. We love these boxy black and gold pendant lights, which hung in a set of three create an unmissable statement piece.

Or, try cylindrical pendant lights, such as our IP44-rated Laverick Cylinder Pendant Light, which clustered together at cascading heights delivers soft yet chic illumination, making even the cosiest of bathrooms feel luxurious.

When placed near mirrors, long or cylindrical pendant lights offer a dramatic style without getting in the way of your vanity – these double up with a practical benefit, illuminating the parts of the room which for functional reasons demand the most light.

Build ambience: pendant lighting in your bedroom

With bedroom lighting, there are fewer safety regulations to be concerned about (unless you’ve gone for a luxurious bath in the bedroom setup!), but you’ll want to be mindful of the placement of your pendants in a practical sense. Will this be your main source of ambient lighting in the bedroom, or are you looking to accent certain areas?

Usually the main source of ambient light in a bedroom, a ceiling light works well when positioned around 8 to 12 inches from the ceiling.

Opt for unique textures in your luminaire for an updated version of a classic chandelier. We love prismatic, porcelain styles which refract and amplify light in a really interesting way. This textured pendant combines a bold design focal point with a soft, ambient feel, with the added bonus of dimmable functionality to help layer and build light to suit any mood.

Pendant lights can also serve as task lighting, and are a stunning alternative to bedside or dressing table lamps. By positioning pendant lights on either side of the bed you can achieve a modern, symmetrical appearance, while freeing up space for your bedside essentials.

    Moroccan style pendant lighting

Patterned glass pendants, like these Moroccan-inspired Gold Leaf Pendant Lights, offer a playful, practical way to illuminate your space while adding a stylish finish to your bedroom setup.
